The Open Sky - Watercolour Artists in Newlyn

The title of the film comes from Stanhope Forbes (1857-1947), leading light of the Newlyn school of painters, who wrote of their mission: 'to set up our easels in country districts where we could pose our models and attack our work in sunshine or in shadow under the open sky.'
The colony of painters who based themselves in Newlyn in the 1880s and 1890s were associated with a high degree of realism, combined with an attempt to capture the Cornish light by painting outside, inspired by the French plein air naturalists led by Jules Bastien-Lepage. This in turn led them to adopt a 'square brush' technique also derived from Bastien-Lepage.
The four painters involved were aware of the Newlyn school and keen to see how the location, as well as the cultural heritage, impacted on their work. Each reacted in individual and sometimes unexpected ways with paintings done on location or in the studio.
