This film is introduced by the well-known westcountry
broadcaster, Ron Bendell. As a farmer, writer and television presenter Ron has lived and worked in Devon for most of his life.
He is a respected and popular local character, well known for his witty presentation style. His love for the county adds an
extra dimension to this film.
We have made
this film to help the viewer discover Devon’s special people and places, capturing the spirit and beauty of this wonderful
county. It visits lesser known places and meets the local people along the way.
You will discover that Devon has a rich and diverse landscape, from the open and bleak
moorland of Dartmoor to the neat picturesque villages set in sheltered valleys and coves.
We meet with a lady in Branscombe whose mother
was one of the many famed Honiton lace-makers, learn how cliff farmers grew new potatoes along the local coast, using donkeys
to carry them up the narrow cliff paths. We discover the story behind the world reknowned Widecombe Fair, the fascinating
history of the Tiverton Canal, and how the ancient Stone Rows of Dartmoor guided ancient travellers to distant parts of the
country.
The film
takes us on a journey the length and breath of the county – from Tiverton in the east to Lopwell dam in the west, steeped
in the history of mining; from the beautiful fishing village of Branscombe on the south coast to the imposing splendor of
Arlington Court in the north.
All the while you will be sampling the archaeology, culture, wildlife and breathtaking
scenery.
