This film is introduced and narrated
by writer and Broadcaster Clive Gunnell. Clive lives and breathes Somerset, having spent most of his life walking every foot
of its coastal paths and many of its hills. He is best known for his television series exploring the westcountry with his
faithful black Labrador. His home is near Wellington overlooking the Blackdown Hills, a view he treasures every day.
The history of Somerset goes back to Neolithic man, ancient pathways revealing the strategic position of the county
as well as its spiritual importance.
From Glastonbury Abbey to the Tor and the story of the monks of Muchelney, Somerset has a place in folklore. But the
county is also reknowned for its spirit – the brews of cider which have become synonymous with Somerset, now one of
England’s favourite beverages.
Chedder cheese, another of England’s favourites, and water mills; the fabric of Somerset is steeped
in tradition and its industries provide a fascinating insight into a westcountry way of life now a distant memory. Amongst
the Wetlands, the willow craft continues in the old traditional methods and the ancient skills of the potter still thrive.
We travel to Hatch Court, a country seat boasting the oldest indoor tennis court in
England, built to the same design as the original at Hampton Court; and meet a man with a passion for restoring old lorries.
