Narrated by Tristan Payne, well
known as a presenter of ITV’s ‘Wish you were Here’. Tristan has a passion for discovering holiday locations
like Wiltshire and the counties of the westcountry. In particular, he enjoys finding new places as seen in his ITV Westcountry
series ‘On Foot’ in which he walked around the counties of the south-west. One of his abiding interests is the
conservation of our natural heritage. He strongly believes that the real Wiltshire
needs to be preserved and hopes this film will bring a fresh understanding to those who want to discover its beauty, uniqueness
and spiritual nature.
Wiltshire is arguably the most spiritual of the English counties, with an abundance of ancient monuments, the jewel
of which is one of the wonders of the ancient world, Stonehenge.Neolithic pathways converge on the stone circles of Avebury
whilst the chalklands are dotted with images of the White Horse.
The medieval village of Lacock together with its neighbouring Lacock Abbey stand as symbols of the history of England,
whilst a visit to Harthan House, near Corsham, once the retreat of Royalty gives us the opportunity to travel back in time.
Wiltshire also boasts a rich heritage of castles dating back to the time of the Civil War.
It is a county of ancient and diverse trading routes,
having the oldest road in the country namely The Ridgeway. The Kennet and Avon canal claims the most spectacular lock system over Caen Hill near Devises comprising 29 lock gates, and in Swindon, home the The
Great Western Railway, a museum is dedicated to the great achievements of the engineers that produced some of the finest locomotives
in the world.
Farming remains a key
industry in the county and its role is preserved at Farmer Giles Farmstead where methods now long gone can still be seen.
Nearby we visit a Rare Breeds farm.
The ancient city of Salisbury with its medieval cathedral and bustling commercial centre, typifies Wiltshire as a county
of endless surprises.
